Mano (S.Uliva)

Fui denunciata come cristiana.

The cultural association Made continues its program with a new exhibition curated by Daniela Boni, hosting the rising star of Latin American photography, the Mexican Jose Luis Cuevas, identified by several critics as belonging to the “nuevo documentalismo” — that kind of reportage that breaks with conventionalism rendering photography an aesthetic and expressive issue, gaining its rightful place in the contemporary artistic practices. In this exhibition two of Cuevas’ projects come together: Nueva Era  and La apestosa. Each project  helps to illustrate the photographer’s research, who narrates through his images, with a frequent use of poetry, the weaknesses of the human being without passing any ethical or moral judgment, but rather often identifying himself with the portrayed characters, almost as if a part of himself would be in front of the camera and not behind it.The veneration of alcohol and sex, as well as the faith in shamanism, witchcraft, prophecies and a thousand of other spoiled beliefs. In these pictures, the humanity portrayed by José Luis Cuevas reveals its own weakness.

Artistic Affinities
It’s not unusual, in art , for artists and designers who have completely different styles of expression, to have something in common, be it connected to their poetry, harmony, subject matter or their ideas connected to these themes.
Daniela Boni has chosen to exhibit the works of Pastore and Bovina within Cuevas’ photographic exhibition. This choice was made due to the fascinating dialogue between religious themes, ranging from Cuevas’ images to Pastore and Bovina’s artistic objects. In one instance, a heart with spikes, an icon of suffering in which often sacred and secular are confused.
Pastore and Bovina work in Bologna.
