Work made of paper and plexiglass
Original by Adele Biscaretti, handmade with the origami tessellation technique based on a model by Eric Gjerde

Paper on hexagonal base and plexiglass
47 x 51 x 8 cm

Origami artefacts made with the tessellation technique. The term derives from the Latin “tessella” which means small square.
Tessellations are geometric shapes repeated infinitely on a plane; unlike the mosaic which assembles multiple pieces in origami, the design is developed by folding a single sheet of paper.

The transparent plexiglass, thanks to its characteristics, is an excellent support and allows a clean and essential assembly. The plates create a material contrast with the lightness of the paper and allow the different views offered by the tessellation: front, back and backlight.

I chose semi-transparent parchment paper because it best highlights the final design and allows you to see the overlapping layers, enhancing the folding process.

Origami in general and tessellation in particular require a lot of precision and concentration. Once the first phase of studying and learning a new model has been overcome (which can present difficulties and sometimes even some turbulence!), the mind totally focused on the folds becomes calm and silent. Time vanishes and thoughts vanish. Bending becomes meditation.
